Oh man, I'm still listening to c64 tunes (sidplayer is perfect!) and I have the back in time cd's (cool) and I still LUUURVE the Hubbard tune on the B-side of the first zzap tape (issue 26?)
Ok, here are the results of the Dutch jury:
Monty on the run (Hubbard) 12 points
Sanxion (Hubbard) 10 points
Delta (Hubbard) 8 points
Highlander (Galway) 7 points
(=a kind of magic by queen)
Skate or Die (Hubbard) 6 points
Tetris (?) 5 points
Arkanoid (Galway) 4 points
Wizball (Galway) 3 points
Ghosts 'n' Goblins (Galway?) 2 points
I liked the Mikie tune too, (beatles- a hard days night) so 1 point to Mikie (Galway tune isn't it?
Over to Zzap rap again
Cheers Rob

I am surprised that so few have mentioned Maniacs of Noise/Jeroen Tel and none Steve Rowlands. I am sure either people have not hear their works, or carry certain nostalgic feelings for Rob Hubbard, Martin Galway etc. They have done some really good pieces..but it was Jeroen Tel, I think, who was the master C64 musician. Here goes my selection of best tunes:

Stormlord -Intro screen music (Maniacs of nOise)
Turbo outrun -title tune - (maniacs of noise)
Flimbo's Quest - title tune
Cybernoid II
Mayhem in monsterland -end game tune
Hawkeye - title /highscore tunes
Golden axe - highscore tune
Supremacy - title tune (Jeroen Tel)
Retrograde - title and others
Last Ninja II - good quality tunes overall

Ok, i am over top ten but Tim follin in Bionic commandos, LED Storm and Ghouls n' Ghosts made excellent pieces. Creatures /Creatures 2s' cute tunes. Also, did anybody listen thru the 7 minute long Zamzara title tune? quite a surprise! I might still be missing a few still...

Hey Farhan,
seems like you 'n me share the same taste if it comes to c64 tunes!
Oh yeah Tim Follin rules, and Jeroen Tel surely was the king, although JCH/Vibrants was a talented musician aswell!

Cheers,
/Matt

hmmm... yeah farhan.... I, belonging pretty much to the later era of C64... am a big fan of Jeroen Tel too. In fact I'll get really hazy and drunk here and say... he is still my fav musician of all time... not just C64... not just the games musician... BUT the greatest all time musician of all time!!! hows that??? eh!?! eh!?!?!?! btw... if u havent... go to the MON site and download 'Mountain Breeze' (One word... AWESOME!!!).... and 'Versions' (loved the Robocop 3 ditty in there!) and i make everybody at the office listen to em... at least 12 or 13 times a day!!! soon i'll be hanged on the notice board :)

hmmm... btw.... when i listed my top 5... i just had to be fair to the other guys too :) i mean how could i just leave Robb out??? or Galway??? or the Follin bros???? they were making those tunes far before Jeroen did... and if i b very honest.... my top 10 list would at least b filled with 7 or 8 MON tunes :) with the first 5 strictly intact for MON. I mean yeah... listen to supremacy, rubicon, stormlord, robocop 3, turbo outrun, Golden axe, outrun europa.... i mean... heeeeey the list just goes on... with no competition in sight!!!

The absolute #1 tune on c64 isnt from a game.

Grab a demo called 'Shaped Up' by shape, and listen carefully to the intro tune (actually, just load the file 'INTRO' and run it)

This is pure perfection.

But there is so many good tunes for the 64, it`s almost impossible to make a top 10 list.

Rob Hubbard is God.
my fave tune is Phantoms.
there are so many Hubbard tunes that i couldnt list a 2nd or 3rd or 4th etc, so out of the 'non-Rob' stuff -
2nd - Rambo (the whole lot)
3rd - Trap (coz i listened to it to death doing the Trap 2 demo)
4th Metal Bar II music by Demon
5th most of the stuff on HVSC (all 15,000 tunes)

:o)

The only music that has been stuck in my head for the last 8 years is Turrican Level 3-1. Its incredible.
There were so many talented musicians working on the C64, I wonder what they're up to.

I used to write music on my C64 and even composed the music I entered into my GCSE on it. Although I was not a published C64 composer I went on to study music at University (and did OK). I've written music for a couple of short films and company training films. I also write a lot of stuff just for myself and am starting a new music project at the moment. The funny thing is, I've been revisiting the old C64 classics and now realise what a massive influence on my own music they have been. Whilst I can see the Brian Eno and John Carpenter influences in my music,I hadn't really recognised the influence of SID. Even the constraint of the number of voices has remained in the way I construct my pieces.
As a final note, if anyone needs any music written for projects, let me know - films or other. I do it for fun.

I found a wonderful remix of Galway's Wizball tune, called Catelite Lives by d0d0 -- check out his website here:

www.tunespotting.co.uk

Also, just stumbled across a site devoted to such c64 remixes:

remix.kwed.org

Check it out!
