Pretty sure it was going to be "Frankie Goes to Hollywood"... it was the #1 in their list a few issues before...

Is that true?
CAN you believe it!
I think FGTH is actually THE biggest overhyped and overrated game of all time!
It was so popular because the band was so "hot" those days.
The game is a disaster itself and all the subgames are DRAMA.
I never-ever-understood why this game got such a warm welcome!
In my opinion FGTH can NEVER compete with the likes of the classic EPYX games or Leaderboard, or Ghosts 'n Goblins, Mercenary & Ballblazer, REALLY classic stuff. No argue!
DISCUSSION TIME !!??

aaahhhh yeah def a discussion time :) hmmm.... i have to agree with u both... i mean yes FGTH was an ok release and i enjoyed it to some extent.... but REALLY... there were far better games released after and even within that era.... PARADROID bieng a classic... so was wizball..... and in later years... creatures 2 and turrican 2. but yeah i guess.... FGTH WAS named the best game of all time in the Top Ton section :)

Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Myth,
definitely MY all time favorites heheh...

Naah, never liked FGTH aswell, never understood the big fuzz about it anyway.
Oh yeah, or how about Rally Speedway? Ever played this cutie? What are you waiting for then?
I suppose it's the best two player action ever seen on any system! What? Yeah, really!

Cheers,
/Matt

The game was going to be Elite. Also due on that ill-fated covertape: the full versions - with expansion missions! - of Julian Gollop's excellent Laser Squad and Lords of Chaos. Oh, and a couple of average fillers to make up the numbers.

Not bad, n'est pas?

Commodore Format had first option on Mayhem for covertape purposes, by the way - part and parcel of the contract signed before CF embarked upon their mammoth coverage (diary, and so on) of the game.

Oh, and I seem to recall the team /seriously/ regretted the whole Frankie Goes To Hollywood thing. It was just the way they put the chart together, with votes having a 'value' - something like 10 points for favourite game, five for the second, three for the third, and so on. Frankie's position at the top was... well, just indicative of its steady performance in all the participant's charts. It did look odd, though. People laughed. And pointed. The shame.

And even Denton Designs apparently thought it weird...

At least FGTH was kind of unique -- the #1 spot could have been taken by a generic game, although I personally would have placed Paradroid there...

More people should play Laser Squad! I want ppl to play against :)

Excellent game. Must admit I was surprised as anything to see it in #2 place on their list, but it's in my top 10 now...

I've heard that Julian Gollop's doing a new Laser Squad game for the PC, with an onus on Internet play. I can't remember the name of the site, but it can't be too hard to find. Nice to see he's keeping busy now that Mythos is no more - t'was a real shame to see Dreamland Chronicles canned...
