Topic: New Zzap! Project: who wants to review?

Just for my own benefit -- anyone who thinks they might want to do a review, just add your name to the end of this post, then we have some idea how many want to contribute. We'll set a deadline of, say, the end of August for people to reply to this.G

I'd love to help out in some way. I've got an A Level in English Language and a brilliant knowledge of C64 hardware and software. Visit my website:www.chaddytheowl.fsnet.co.uk For a snapshot of my writing on the subject of retro games. There may be a couple of SPAG errors, but that's because I wrote it on Notepad, hence lack of spell check. |

Pick Me! :)In the other thread I offered to do stuff for the Zzap!Back section, but looking at Ish 24, most of the high rating games are ones I either didn't like or have never played, so it's probably best for someone else to do the comments for it. I'm still willing to do the intro though, if nobody else wants to... |

Count me in!.. anything needed, just give me a shout. enigma@fgasking.freeserve.co.uk http://cs.c64.orgThis whole idea sounds very cool! Just one suggestion about distribution.. you could possibly approach Allan Bairstow or Kenz about getting it proffessionally produced as an option second to the PDF idea, as they handle Commodore Scene and Commodore Zone pretty well. I know that Kenz once sold a full colour version of Commodore Zone, and the covers now of the mag are looking great... just like ZZap. Cost wise, if its all printed in colour... it could be something like £4 or £5 for the issue... depends how many are printed I guess. As for Oli.. I think I remember sometime ago that someone approached him about doing a cover for a Audio CD?... and he charges a lot. I mean, if you wanted a fresh new cover designed, it might mean everyone contributing something towards the cost.. otherwise the old Crash issue idea sounds sweet. |

Gordon, I'd be delighted to help. I'm currently working for PC Gameplay magazine and have written for PC Zone, PC Gaming World and Total Control, all here in the U.K. Although I am writing for PC magazines, my real 'bent' is for emulation and I have had massive features published on this very topic in the above magazines.Spookily, I actually passed an interview to join 'Crash' in its heyday, but another project dragged me away! Personally, I'd favour a small 'print run' and would be willing to stump up cash to make this happen (although how much this would cost I have NO idea) I have plenty of free time and can contribute in ANY capacity on the editorial side - from reviews/features/editing etc. For info, PC gamplay has a '350 words a page' count, and this allows ample room for screenshots and box-outs.... Anyway, if I can be of help then drop me a line at craig.vaughan@btinternet.com |

I'd love to do a review for you folks. I've an excellent command of the English language, as well as a little experience in games reviewing (with OGR, RetroSpect and the sadly defunct Converted2.com). If you can fit me in, I'd be only to happy to lend a hand. |

well, I've never been good at reviews. however, since my days reading Zzap!, I have moved to the US. I could get info together and get a Letter From America column or listing going. maybe US games unreleased in the UK? I'm sure theres more stuff from other countries too not collected on the various rom sites out there. or is there?if not, thats fine. I just will be more than happy seeing the ish. that and no one knows me! Gordon, what would be cool is Oli doing a special cover for free! that would be something. |

God, I go away to Paris for the weekend and all bloody hell breaks loose on the board here! :)Okay, you can count me in for anything you would like doing: reviews, features, articles etc etc... As for Gazunta wondering what experience I have in the games industry... I used to freelance review for Oracle Teletext for 3 years (90-92), ghost some articles, features and game guides to Jap games and culture for Superplay mag (92-93), and a whole slew of C64 related malarky for Retrogamer fanzine throughout its existance. Oh and 17 years of C64 ownership must count for something ;) |

Hello Gordon...i gave u the honor of being the first of the zzap staff i am communicating with...u know, i did a feeble atempt of creating my own c-64 mag in those good-old-days..type-writing the whole issue with reviews by me and my friend to make it mostly a two-man show with little help from one of my elder cousins...so, yes i am willing to contribute in any way possible. |

Gordon,I'll be able to do some subbing after September if required. I don't really fancy doing tips again, though. Are you boys sure you actually want tips anyway? Which games are you including tips on? Incidentally, is this project legal? Paul. |

Hi Paul. I'm not Gordon (no, really) but I'll answer you anyway. I suggested the tips thing as I thought it wouldn't be much work, hence if you wanted to be involved, but in a very quick way, that was the way to go. I've asked Waz if he'd like to submit some tips. He still does a page for Commodore Zone! If he doesn't want to do it I guess we could drop the tips altogether. At the end of Sept we should have a features list and Gazunta can start dishing stuff out. If there's something you'd particularly like to do then let him know! Other than that, I've no idea if this is legal, but then I'm a fish. Honest... (Uh, sorry about the lack of grammar/coherance there, but it's the end of a very long day, and commas, are, creeping up in, the most, unexpected places, as are, typos :-) |

>Incidentally, is this project legal?<No. But nobody has contacted us to say it's illegal yet. ;o) Can't see why anyone would object, though -- the Zzap! name is dead, no one's making money out of it, and the people here are doing it because they loved the mag in the first place. It's more of a tribute fanzine kind of thing, not a new issue. I guess if someone said: STOP IT OR WE'LL SUE, we'd have to think again. <listens for a while...> Nope. No one has said it so far. G |

Working at Criterion Games in Guildford. We're just finishing off our first two PS2 games, Airblade (a skating game for Sony) and Burnout (a mad driving game for Acclaim). They're both in the latest issue of Edge and Burnout is on the cover. As a bonus for those curious to how I've changed over the 13+ years since the ZZAP! pics, there's also a very tiny photograph of me inside.PG |

I'm looking forward to that issue of Edge to hit local shores :)Saw Airblade at E3 and it was def. one of the best PS2 titles on show, nice job :) BTW - do you know a Finnish guy called Thomas Puha by any chance? He told me to keep an eye out for you at E3 this year (I even brought along your first issue of Zzap to sign on the off-chance) so I assume you two know each other...or he's stalking you. Or something. |

Hi - I would love to be invovlved. I wouldn't mind writing about adventure games ; maybe an article on what the most prolific adventure writers on the C64 are doing today and what they think about emulation and theie own programs. I am studying for am MA in English so I can write and I'm in 'contact' with Scott Adams so there's a start! Let me know. Peanutuk |

Gordo,I'm up for the odd review, probably best if I review something from our time on ZZAP! (Turbo Out Run maybe??). Maybe I'll let little 'un do the gamesplaying for me and I'll do the typing!!! I don't think tips are a good idea. The retro feel to the mag wouldn't be served by tips in my opinion. It would be great to get a whole bunch of reviewers to look over some old games again...... How about a get together (online or best still IN A LUDLOW PUB!!!)to have a rant and rave about the 'good old days'. Retro enough??? Maybe Stuart Wynne and Phil King might be interested from my era. I'll have to contact them. Robin (Pig in a Poke) Hogg

>>>I'm up for the odd review, probably best if I review something from our time on ZZAP!<<<We could get you on the Zzapback section. >>>I don't think tips are a good idea.<<< They will be for post-Zzap!64 games. Remember that this isn't just a nostalgia-fest, but a kind of 'new' issue, hence the recentish games being reviewed. Glad you're interested though -- that makes three ex-Zzap!64 people now! C

If this idea gets off the ground it will rule. Anyway, regarding the legal side of things I have noticed an N64 mag using the 'Sizzler' logo for any good game.... Somebody, somewhere must own the rights but surely wouldn't mind stuff being used, its not like its going to make oodles of moolah. |

Well, well, well (3 holes in the ground). What a day to do some C64 digging. I think its cos I was up in the loft. Wish I'd never taken about 200+ original C64 tape games down the skip now :-( (Waits for someone to kill me - phew, safe for a while). Well, PG is just down the road from me in Guildford - blimey! Paul, Simon Hadlington here - remember the European games championships in Paris - when was that now - 1990? God I was young then. I'm a dad now too (check out the website). Anyway, I was on the ZZap challenge TWICE and won both times. Since then, as I was so distraught about the ZZap demise I went onto (ahem) Gamesmaster - oh dear. Never did get that spraypainted quickshot 2. So (there IS a point?) I'd like to challenge PG or Gordo in games. I think I played PG before and as he IS only 10 miles away (I live in Bagshot) then I think this would be top. Got a video camera and everything. Hurrah! |
