Was I the only one here blisfully unaware of the amount of 'cracked' C64 games that were around in the eighties? I don't think I owned 1 copied game for my C64.

It's just struck me playing on the C64 emulator how many of them are cracked versions. Jeez...I could've save a lot of money ;)

True... but a proper huge collection of originals (such as my own) garners a lot of respect and admiration nowadays :p

Yeah, only wished I'd have kept them - instead of selling my C64 + hundreds of games + loads of Zzaps and CU's for about £200 quid.

Only way I could afford an Amiga :)

Rich, you have my sympathies, man. I did EXACTLY that same thing as you for exactly the same reason. I've since bought another c64 but the Zzap and original game collection is gone forever. To make matters worse, the guy I sold it all to is a friend of mine, and he binned THE LOT when he left home and moved in with his girlfriend several years' ago. His choice I guess, if only I'd known, they could've come back home to daddy!

OOOOWWAAARRRGHH!
That must hurt REALLY bad, Andy.
So sorry for you!
Anyway, about the piracy.
I had hundreds of pirated copies, in fact I never had a original in the beginning!
I lived far away from the big cities (ahem, in Holland) so there was no computershop in a 50 miles radius. So what could we kids do?
In fact I never thought about piracy as being bad, since it was the ONLY way to get our games. We had this copy-weekends were everybody brought along there disks and c64 and a copy of 'fast hack'm' , and there we went copying each others disks like a bunch of loonies.
Later, when I started to read about piracy in Zzap, I was really surprised. Didn't feel guilty though, since the distribution in Holland really s*..I mean, was really bad.
So, when I got older, and it was more difficult to get my hands on the games I wanted, I made some trips to the closest cities around and bought OFFICIAL copies of Maniac Mansion and Microprose (sensible) Soccer, which was SOOOOO expensive (I paid 25 bps for MSoccer only) but I didn't regret it , since the games we're GREAT.
I still have them with me.
Me too binned all my zzaps and I sent my c128-d and all thousands of games to some Polish children (aaaahh).
But I'm totally satisfied with the bunch of stuff I bought the last years.
Zzaps 1-50 complete, even a new c128-d, and I bought even some other ORIGINAL games (2nd hand).
So, Piracy-wise we had no choice over here, and I didn't mind at all. It was what made my c64-days so great, being able to play them all.
Cheers,
Rob (biggest jim)

But in those days you bought the hardware and Commodore made a profit on it. These days the games consoles are sold at a loss, so if you buy a console and no games then the platform dies quickly. I'm sure most people bought plenty of games until the copy carts and disk drives became more popular. At least you could buy a decent games for £1.99 back then, even disc games were only £15!!
