Haooy New Year and all that stuff. This board's abit on the quiet side of late. COME ON PEOPLE! We don't want this site to disappear do we? I guess things will improve when Ian gets more issues back on line (although, for some reason I can't access the first issue)

There are down at the moment, even with only 2 issues online, there is too much leeching, people are bypassing the cookie protection and just typing the filenames directly into their browser.

I have two choices, either scramble the filenames so they can't be guessed or find a way to ensure the files can only be accessed through the web page and not directly (I've seen porn sites that do this) but I don't know how to impliment it.

The scrambling isn't ideal as it's nice to be able to easily access the files when they are on your own computer. Perhaps I could write a de-scrambler to rename them back after you have downloaded them.

All this trouble and hassle because of leeching bastards..... :(

In the HTML request headers, there should be a line called "Referer" or something like that, which contains the URL of the page which linked to the requested one. This is used by some sites.
It makes leeching harder (but not impossible because the Referer line can be faked).

However, the best solution would be to limit the number of Kbytes per IP address per day. I seem to remember that some Apache modules do this, although I am not completely sure.

Interesting, I'll have to look into that, although I gotten the encryption bit written anyway, it's not exactly uncrackable but it should stop most of the leechers.
