Well, Gordon would be pleased to hear that.
It certainly were the last quality Zzap!64 issues before the rot definitely set in.
Gordon's site says about Maff Evans:
Culled in the 'Night of the Long Knives', Maff enjoyed a brief spell as a wildebeast before turning his hooves to writing music articles and reviews for Future.
I don't know what he's doing at the moment, though.
He never replied to e-mails about the DEF Tribute anyway.

Maff used to regularly write for Future Music, and was on a quest for musical stardom. Keep checking Future's digital music mags—maybe he still writes for some of them.

He sent me a CD-R of a few remixes he had done for Front 242, a few years back. That was the last I heard of him.

It's down to the staff when you first got into the mag, I reckon (like fave Doc on Doctor Who), so my fave was from the start up till Gary Penn's departure.

I think you're right there, they make the biggest impression, especially when you're of an impressionable age.

Gary Penn = William Hartnell (Always a bit niggly over certain games)
Gary Liddon = Patrick Troughton (Bit of a clown)
Julian Rignall = Tom Baker (Worked for Newsfield for ages, weird hair)
Paul Sumner = The Master (whose body would he have next?!)
Gordon Houghton = Colin Baker (Cruelly sacked at short notice)
Steve Jarrat = Peter Davison (Young Action man!)
Can you thiink of any others?

I think that's true (well, apart from Doctor Who, seeing as I actually think Eccelston is my favourite, oddly enough): Penn and Rignall were the height of Zzap!, closely followed by a certain Mr. Houghton, Ms. Hamza and Mr. Glancey. Everything else was downhill, although I had a soft spot for Robin Hogg's writing, as I also occasionally read The Games Machine before Robin ended up on Zzap!

I think the reason i liked the mag so much was because of the way the staff didnt 'talk down' to you, it influenced me alot, i even wrote in some school thing that Maff Eavans was one of my hereo's (how sad!) but nobody knew who he was.
i remember reading a freinds older brothers collection of older zzaps (JR) and they were still just as good.

Stuart Wynne = Sylvester McCoy, the most cerebral Doctor... I mean editor, and widely liked in fandom
Steve Shields = Jon Pertwee. Mad.

I suppose Chris Anderson could be Eccleston, seeing as he did a really good job, but was only there for a very short period of time.

Nice Doctor/Zzap staff match-ups!
Would've said Steve Shields-Chris Eccleston 'cos Steve was a real geezer-type.

As yet, Eccleston hasn't edited a 'jazz mag'

Nope!
Can't remember what Steve's doing now -- some kind of university course or training, rather than a job.

This topic was getting WAAaaaayyy off topic, so I've split it and moved the Doctor Who stuff to here

It was probably Mr ZzapBack's fault anyway
