ok, this best kept closely guarded secret has gone a lot further than anyone expected and a lot further than any piece of string now. just who on earth is Lloyd Mangram anyway? does he even exist?
my only guess of him so far is that he is purely fictional that doesn't even exist. the only pic we have ever seen of him is some bozo with a complex with a paper bag over his head.
his surname could even suggest that his name is an anagram :!:
i have pondered on this anagram theory for a little while now (about 10 years) and have finally come to a conclusion.
i accuse lloyd mangram of being none other than...Grandma Molly!
whoever the hell she is :?: i rest my case!

Lloyd was several different staff members, generally whoever was Editor/Assistant Editor at the time. For example, Gordo was Lloyd during his tenure as Editor (and I think its obvious!).

Roger Kean was the original Lloyd, though I read an interview with him a couple of years ago, and he STILL denies Lloyd was fictional!

WHy does this keep on coming up? Lloyd's already in a somewhat fragile mental state these days, questions regarding his actually existance do not help!!!

Poor Lloyd - we'll never get him to write for 108 now. Getting him for 107 was hard enough, what with his professional whelk farming, kitten wrestling and duck-flinging endeavours.

You know, somehow I prefer Roger's approach to that of Gordo: although Mangram evidently didn't exist - look at the wild swings in his copy style over the years - it's somehow more fun to pretend that he did.

Me, I was always a fan of the Roger Kean-era Mangram. For some reason I remember him as being articulate and, I don't know, tangibly older and wiser than other bylined writers on Crash and ZZAP! 64. He was my favourite Crash writer when I was a young teen, prior to the dark, dismal, post-covertape, post-quality days.

I was Lloyd Mangram once, during my ZZAP!/CF tenure. I didn't really find a right 'tone', and I wasn't as, um, 'progressive' as some previous Lloyds had been. I was just... well... a bit banal, a bit clueless and, well, a 19-year-old editor struggling to get a magazine out, really.

Strangely enough, the most - for me - appropriate piece of Lloyd writing I ever did was for a feature in Edge's 100th issue, where he, me, wrote a short piece on progress in the games industry. I could probably dig it out if anyone really wanted to read it, but I digress. I tried to make it sound like the Lloyd I remembered as a thirteen, perhaps fourteen-year-old lad. Around the time I spoke to Roger Kean for another article, mentioned that I'd penned a late, late Lloyd piece, and sent it over to him. His response? That Lloyd had gone upmarket. I went back and read previous Lloyd stuff and, sure enough, my recollection of Lloyd's writing style was wildly divorced from what he, they, the Lloyd gestalt, actually wrote.

But then, maybe I'm full of shit.

Have you ever considered that Lloyd might encourage former Newsfield staffers to perpetuate rumours of his non-existence?

;-)

Yup, I do remember that very well.
I'll scan it today, and put it on my site so everybody on this forum can read it to see if it was any good.
Gni-hi-hi

Btw, welcome to the forum JP (again)![/b]

Well my English has always been too poor to notice any differences between the supposed Lloyds, so the idea that he might not exist just never crossed my mind.

It was a bit of a fatherxmaslike shock to hear those rumours, but I'm still in denial. He just was influenced by the atmosphere in the mag, so he was, for example, wacky when Gordo was ED, etc. I'm sure he's fine and lives in Ludlow.

I seem to recall to like the Stuart Wynne period Lloyd. Asked about his fave game, he answered that he loved to have a relaxing round of Leaderboard now and then...

EDIT: Woohoo, I'm Ken's fishy friend now!

I also liked all those bananas and slobberers, and a comic stripe about Maff and his coolness (OK OK I'm steering off topic)

Lloyd's piece in Edge 100's 'Prophet Forecast' feature, as threatened.

"As TH Huxley once wrote, 'I am too much of a sceptic to deny the possibility of anything'. I've heard that rewritable discs, broadband communication networks, and peer-to-peer software will lead to a renaissance for domestic piracy; perhaps the industry, as a consequence, will accrue much of its revenue by means of levies imposed upon blank DVD-RAM media. I've also been informed that the greatest strides in haptic technolgies with the potential to increase and improve player/game interactivity will be made not by Nintendo, nor indeed Microsoft, but by the pornography trade. Voltaire said of the future: 'If we do not find anything pleasant, at least we will find something new'. As regards the games trade, I wouldn't hesitate to transpose 'pleasant' and 'new', but then, I can't recall a single key innovation made in the field of entertainment software since the 1980s. Can you?"
