Doctor Who is SO UK.
I have no clue what's it all about.

The six million dollar man...now that's a different story. Loved it!

That's part of its appeal — the fact that it's not another bloody American series. The new Who is actually really very good indeed — a wonderful surprise!

Because new Who was predictably charmless; bigger surprise was how poor the stories were. Hence anyone who thought it was anything better than average is really weird! NB. My sister likes it!

I thought the new series was pretty good - A couple of the stories were a bit cringeworthy ('Dalek' had misplaced emotion), but a good few of the stories were exciting (especially 'The Empty Child').

Your sister is meant to like it - Let's face it, if they had done another series like V1 Doctor Who, it wouldn't have lasted on prime time Saturday night telly - TV has changed (and so have people) since the times when people would start off by watching 'Grandstand' and go right through till 'Parkinson' at the end of the night. With so many multi-channels and people being generally restless, you have to make it fast paced and exciting.

Seems I'll have to stick with me DVDs of *proper* Doctor Who, then!

Frankly, I totally disagree (and I'm hardly in the minority). I personally never really went for the "old" Who, even as a kid, and I like it even less now. However, I found the new series gripping, fun, mostly well-written (despite the odd niggle) and an excellent reworking of the concept.

So there.

Horses for courses, Mr Thinner. It's obviously not going to be everyone's tea. Mind you, in a straight comparison with the old Who, it's hard to be too critical of the new one with regards to its writing. And in a comparison with almost everything else on television (especially in this genre), Who comes across rather well.

It's funny reading a thread entitled 'The Gordo Years Were the Best' and getting a discussion on Dr Who. I have visions of Mr Houghton being chased through Ludlow by a Dalek

I think we should step into the TARDIS and let it take us back on-topic! :)

(I'm to blame for the Dr Who comparisons)

A Dalek'd get knackered -- too many hilly streets in Ludlow!
