Fab & I went to see Rob Hubbard and 'his' C64 Orchestra!

Post by Lloyd Mangram »

Hi folks,

Fab(rizio) and I went to a unique concert last night in Gigant, Apeldoorn (the Netherlands).
We also stumbled upon Jeroen and Johan, mods and admins of Lemon64.
A Dutch ensemble played Classical renditions of Rob Hubbard en Jeroen Tel's epic C64 tunes.

Rob Hubbard as well as Jeroen Tel were present at the premiere
I didn't bring my Rob Hubbard mask ™ again, would've been funny as he stood next to me at the bar, hehe.

Here's my report<-linky :)
You just had to be there. It was truly awesome.
See the pix and flix for yourself.

The Delta performance was *out of this world*!

Like it? Comments? Anyone?

General info about c64orchestra
A coproduction by Micromusic Netherlands and productiehuis Oost-Nederland (ON).
Micromusic is a web community which roots lie deeply in retro-games music. Within the micromusic scene, game computers do not merely function as a game console, but as a musical instrument as well. Productiehuis ON is primarily working on new music and crossovers within the world of popculture. Their motto is "ONusual stuff for normal people". Recent fascination in the Commodore 64 (not just as a retro game computer) has fuelled compelling interest for the c64 as an instrument in the dance-scene (think of the Dutch hit from the artist Bastian: You've got my love in 2001).
For this new production, Micromusic and productiehuis ON combined forces and invited members of the Dutch Ricciotti ensemble. Together with conductor Bas Wiegers they founded the C64 orchestra. This new orchestra focuses their attention on the groundbreaking 80s computer, the Commodore 64. Micromusic and ON also approached two of the most experienced C64-composers of the 1980's, Rob Hubbard and Jeroen Tel. The C64 orchestra will perform their music, with scoring done by Rob Hubbard himself. The game scores that are to be performed include the following Rob Hubbard compositions: Delta, Commando, Monty on the Run, One Man And His Droid and International Karate.
Also Jeroen Tel's Cybernoid II, Hawkeye, Myth and Supremacy will be performed.

The international premiere will be on 22 september in de Gigant in Apeldoorn (the Netherlands). Tickets are available at: de Gigant (only in Dutch) or when you are living outside Holland call 003155522 09 93

Yes, and it was a very good concert. Not very long, 1 hour or so, but well played. The orchestra members were very young. If my Dutch is good enough (it isn't) the host said that they were born long after the C64 times. Yet they played very professionally.

At one point, a drunk guy, who was sitting next to me, Mr.Zzapback and the two Lemon64 guys, started disturbing other people, just while the orchestra was playing. Luckily he was carried away soon, so the performance was not marred, and the evening stayed very enjoyable.

And I came back home at 4.30 AM. But it was worth it

I was forgetting: after C64 Orchestra played, Jeroen Tel acted as DJ, while dance remixes of his C64 tunes played. But I'm not that fond of dance music (actually, I'm not fond of dance music at all), so I couldn't really appreciate it. And the other companions agreed, therefore we left before it was finished.
