I have started to add the 100 All-Time Computer Greats by Mel Croucher feature to the site. The other 3 parts will be added shortly.

Mel's stuff completely went over my head when I originally read Zzap as a lad (and Under the Baudwalk still does!) but this feature does have some laughs in it, if not much factual infomation. This is corrected in the next 3 parts as he starts to document actual contributations of real people.

Me, too -- which is the reason we dropped him.

:) That and the fact that the column was always voted least liked in readers surveys :)

I can appreciate the column more now in my mature years (except the Baudwalk one!) but they probably didn't really belong in a games mag all the same!

Absolutely. To us 20-40 year olds it's well written and mostly interesting; but that wasn't the age range of the mag at the time. :)

Well, I have to be honest, I too missed most of Mel's stuff originally by choice, but have recently gone back (thanks to the scans here) and read some of it. Very good stuff actually that, as mentioned, would have probably gone stright over my naive, young head.

Fun, as everybody agrees that they appreciate Mel's articles now more than they were first published. The same holds for me too. Reasons? For me: they contain lots of quotes and references to people and facts, and you cannot fully appreciate if you don't know them; they were not game-specific, although they were on a games mag; they were aimed to a more mature public than the average Zzap! reader; they need a very good knowledge of English, and mine was good enough at that time (well, it is not at this time, either, but it improved a little)

But anyway I remember enjoying Classic Computer Cock-Ups even in the 80s.

Yeah, I loved the Cock-ups feature.

We'll see what Mel has to say about the various columns in the interview I'm currently doing...

So, has the interview happened? Can we expect to see it in a Retro gamer issue soon?

Unfortunately, I've been usurped.
Someone else is doing the Mel Croucher interview now.

Yep, don't know when. Shame, because I did a great little interview by e-mail with Robin Evans.

No, an interview with Rob, mostly about working with Mel. I'm still waiting to hear if RG want to add it to their Mel interview.
