New music for old game

I'm currently attending a course for composing music for games and are looking into what to do for examination project.

One suggestion is to write music and apply sound effects to a fictive game. But I was thinking, what about writing completely new music (not remake) for an old 8-bit game?

So I'm currently looking for a c64 game (or at least 8-bit) that could benefit from a state of the art new soundtrack and effects. Preferably lots of strings and cinematic style.

Any suggestions what could be a good game to use?

A little follow up, if anyone is interested. I ended making a new soundtrack for Ant Attack. I've put it all up at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GhCz3HWyVk if you want to hear how it ended up.

Damn, those ants move fast! Your soundtrack really matches the panic of the game and the relaxation when a level is completed!
