Can the reveiw for Catalypse really be justified?

A score in the 20's for a game that though not unbelievable was surely worth more...

Good graphics, nicely drawn sprites and smooth movement (imo),
Great sound and music (except for slightly dodgy speech),
Good challenge and lastability- not too easy - not too hard...
Certainly playable though missing the X factor.

A score in range of 70-80 maybe a fairer reflection on a half decent game?
(CF = 90% possibly not that good.. )

Do you think this game should have scored higher? If so, how high?
Was the review harsh or fair? (how can 2 mags be almost 70% apart?)

Maybe I'm wrong, but I suspect the two magazines were having some kind of ratings war at the time. There were just too many occasions where they were at extremes. This happened now and again with Zzap! and CU, but not as often and as obviously.

As for Catalypse, it was a slightly above average Armalyte rip-off. At the time, I'd have rated it at about 60%.

I played Catalypse only recently, and I'd rate it 70-75%

It surely isn't very original, and if you compare it to Armalyte it certainly feels a bit ashamed, but it looks and plays fairly nicely and I found it well worth a bit of gamesplaying time.
The end of game sequence was also very good, one of the best on the c64 if you ask me. And the speech in the beginning was quite great too.

CF was surely overenthusiastic about it, but Zzap! was the one that got this one worse.
