An emulator is a program for the PC that fools the PC into thinking its the C64 (or whatever computer you are trying to emulate!).
A popular emulator is CCS64 - When you run this on the PC it will show the C64 start-up screen then you can load any game images that you have on your hard drive/CD.
I will come back and post some helpful links for you shortly....

Ok Here we Go!....

There are two popular emulators that will emulate the C64 on your PC

CCS64 - Slightly Akward to use at first but compatible with the majority of games - http://www.computerbrains.com/ccs64/index.html

WinVice - Easier to use but not as compatible. Still worth downloading as you might prefer this to CCS64 - http://viceteam.bei.t-online.de/

Now you will need some games to play on the emulators. The usual file extensions are .d64 .t64 .prg .crt - Don't worry too much about those for now!

You can download some classic games from the following sites:
www.c64.com
ftp://c64.rulez.org/pub/c64/scene/old

There is a programmer called Richard Bayliss who still ocassionally programs new games for the C64 - You can get the games from his site-
http://www.redesign.sk/tnd64

You also mentioned about transferring games over to your C64 - Its a bit tricky as you need a special cable to connect your disk drive/tape recorder to the PC, so it might be worthwhile playing the games on an emulator? Anyway if you still want the info about transferring games from PC to C64, then I can get it for you.

Hope this all helps!!
