The Def Guide to Zzap!64

Downloaded Thing on a Spring recently and have been playing it, and managed to get further than at any time when I was a kid.

However, I get to the 2nd last room (the one where Thing has to cross the top of all the compartments that are shaped like pits) and I don't see how to get to the exit door on the right side of the screen (its beneath the level of the compartments). I've got all the switches and puzzle pieces - what am i missing? Please help. I started this game in 1985 - it's be nice to finish it in 2005...

Couldnt you hold like shift and 1 and home and some other combination of keys that caused your fingers to become permanently mangled all at once to do some sort of cheat mode? That's the only way I manage to finish it, bloody hard game.
