I just completed the compilation (don't you just love alliteration?) of the Lemon Forum c64 games top list.

Great work, SLF.

Pity that Ghostbusters didn't make it in (it's a great game ... really! :D ), but I'm happy to see PSI-5 get in there at 83. Yay!

I'd love for some of the unsung greats make it into one of these lists someday -- Braybrook's Morpheus and Walker's Citadel are superb games but are greatly under-appreciated.

Rant over.

Thanks! :)
I absolutely agree about Citadel, a forgotten Classic (not about Ghostbusters, but there you go).
I'm pretty happy with the results myself, but of course there are some games that shouldn't be up there (i.e. Microprose Soccer, Ghosts'n'Goblins [controversial]) and other c64 defining titles amazingly left out (Project: Stealth Fighter, Hunter's Moon, Spindizzy)...
Tastes, tastes...
My top games: 1.Hawkeye, 2.Delta, 3.Creatures 2, 4.Armalyte, 5.Bubble Bobble, 6.Uridium, 7.Ikari Warriors, 8.Bionic Commando, 9.Buggy Boy, 10.Archon.

I agree about Microprose Soccer. Mind you, I don't see how it got 90% at the time (and I'm guessing Gordo won't be able to enlighten us on this one!) :)

Personally, I do understand why it's (microprose soccer) in: I bought it and I loved it, and I've played it for quite some time. It's not THAT classic though, I admit. But certainly it has historical value being the predecessor to Sensible Soccer. And now THAT was truly a great game.
But I'm really happy that Matchday II just got in. :D

I'm a confused old man who can't remember where he put his shoes last night. As for Spindizzy and Hunter's Moon being left out -- all I can say is  And Thrust at 31? Pah! ;)

btw, don't forget the Zzap!#107 Top 50 of all time at The Burrow (where, Ant, Psi-5 reached the dizzy heights of 46th place): http://www.the-burrow.freeserve.co.uk/z ... top50.html

Hi folks,
what I like to know is how many people participated in the Lemon top 100.
And how many in that Zzap top 50? (wasn't it something like 800?)
Personally I like the face of the top 50 better. Nice and tidy. Could be psychological though.

Elite on 3 & 7 in both charts? Are there people out there who actually played it and enjoyed it, or do they all put it in their lists because they 'think' it should be?

Mm...

Ah, yes. Warms the cockles, that does. Thanks for the reminder about the 107 Top 50, Gordo. :)

Count me as one who has played it and enjoyed it, biggestjim. I still haven't played a space exploration game that matches the feeling of playing Elite (though I hear X2 may be a contender). Sure, like me Elite's aged somewhat but even taking into account my jaded cynicism Elite's a masterpiece.

165 people on Lemon (as written on top of the list), whilst, according to The Burrow, more than 300 for Zzap!107.

Personally on the whole I like the Lemon one more, since I'm a prevalent 1987-89 c64er, and the other chart has a 1984-86 big feeling to it (plus it lacks Rainbow Islands, IK+, Nebulus, Stunt Car Racer...). Not that it's not a great list, though.

On the subject of Microprose Soccer, I have played and enjoyed the game back then (more than EHIS and Match Day 2, and I liked both of them too), but after you have put your hands on, say, Kick Off 2 on the Amiga I don't see how you could want to have another go at the former...

On the subject of Elite, if I had the time, I would thoroughly check it, 'cause I enjoyed a LOT Space Rogue (one of my absolute faves, in fact). There are a lot of real fans of c64 Elite on Lemon.

Microprose Soccer was one of those games I enjoyed for a few days, but after you realise there's only two ways to score against the top teams, it becomes a drag. I could win the World Cup every time, playing Oman... (And this wasn't a case of "exploiting" trick, like in EHIS - it really was the only way to score, but pretty much guaranteed each time. Bad AI.)

Oh yes, you got a point here Craig.
Now I remember for example the 'diagonal' shots and all that.
It's true, against the computer it wasn't much, but in two player mode it was a lot better. (I always had difficulties beating Brazil though, even with Holland...in that sense it was quite realistic, ha!)
Oh well, it had a nice (Galway) tune, very upbeat.
(btw, NOT the music you heard while you were flicking through the options, that tune was making me crazy!)
Ta!

I could always see that Elite was a great game with a lot more depth than most other games at the time, but I couldn't play it cos it was too hard. :(

Agreed that Paradroid is my favourite C64 game of all time, if I'd voted in the poll I'd have put it no.1. I always had to cheat on Elite to get a docking computer as I crashed every single time I went from Lave to Zaonce (I didn't even have to look the names of the planets, that's how much I played it).

"The Sentinel" is a bit low though, in the Lemon poll, innit? And "Head Over Heels" is way low...that was a hell of a game.
