Dr Who (2005)

Post by LeeT »

Watched the first episode of this tonight....

SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!

It's very fast paced - The first episode is completly self-contained (ie no cliffhangers!). There's a lot of humour and the script and some of the acting is VERY camp (I'm thinking of Chris). There's the occasional serious bit, but it's very light hearted.

The TARDIS control room is VERY similar to the 1996 TV Movie (Gothic and big!). Some of the effects look a bit cheap and obvious, but a huge improvement on old!

Overall - Promising. Not sure whether it's as good as the hype, but I think we will see when there is a story set on an alien planet.

Was that on TV? I haven't even seen any adverts for it yet!

Erm no... not quite!

It's due to start on Staurday March 26th - There was a five second trailer on BBC One tonight (the new style BBC trailers where the main actors just stare at the camera!).

Looking forward to it.... not sure if Christopher Eccleston's accent is in keeping with Dr. Who (sorry cannot distance myself from Tom Bakers booming voice) but going to give it a good go.

In the Express today they were saying that he might not return for a second series as he doesn't want to get typecast... looking for +++ wages already!!!

He's on Jonathan Ross as well tonight at 10.25 I think

I don't think he will hold them hostage for a wage increase - Eccleston is the sort of actor who seems to want to move onto the next challenge. However I would have thought that they would put some kind of option in his contract, so they could get him to make at least two series - Bearing in mind that two years was the previous minimum for a Doctor. Apparently he asked for an audition - Maybe now he realises how much he is required to take part in publicity for the series, he is reluctant to do any more?

I heard that the second series was already in pre-production, so guess he might be staying along. Hope so.

Thought it was quite good really - did like the humour and I did feel it had the same feel as the old series. I think I am going to enjoy the guest stars, with Mark Benton in this episode.

Going to stay with it, it can only get better

It's not really in pre-production - The BBC haven't yet given the green light for a second series (though I expect they will know in a few weeks when the ratings for the first few episodes come in). Russell T Davies has said that they have quite a few ideas for the next series though.

Zoe Wannamaker is a guest in the next episode, playing the oldest woman in the world!

Apparently the first episode has been watched by up to 10.5 million viewers - not bad these days!

The "conspiracy" idea and the character of Clive was well done, but possibly under-used. It does feature in some of the books, and the BBC even set up a website with the pictures from the episode...

10 million is good, particularly up against Antandec

It really was an excellent series. I was never a huge Who fan as a kid, but this series, despite the odd slip-up, kept me and the missus gripped, to the point that we stayed in on Saturday evenings until the show had finished!

And although Tennant only had a very short amount of screen time, he very much looked the part.

So, what do we do on Saturday evenings now the series has finished?

Great ending, looking forward to series 2 (and 3!)
