Em, not hard to see which one looks a lot better (ie the one on the left!)

The original's "oliver Frey" down the side does looks kinda tacky.

CraigGrannell wrote:I agree with everything you said, Rob: the typography is pretty awful, and the general design leaves a lot to be desired. In fact, it looks like it was knocked up in about 15 minutes, so I decided to challenge myself to do something better in that time, the results of which are below (and although my version is far from perfect, bear in mind I took quarter of an hour doing it, and that in that time I searched the internet for the art to use).

My 15-minute effort:

And side-by-side with the Thalamus Books version:

STUNNING!!
I was planning to do the same, but I didn't have the time yet.
Because of all the DEF tribute stuff.
Excellent Craig.
I'll try and create one asap as well.
And, I'll gently try to direct Roger to this thread.

Nice!
Ta!

Oi! You bloody talented people! Stop that ... you're making us ham-fisted plebs jealous. :D

Great looking book though. I'll be picking up a copy. By the way, your cover rocks, Craig.

And don't be too disappointed Rob. I'm sure all your effort with be worthwhile.

I emailed Thalamus Books a few days ago for some more information about the Oli Frey book. If I get a response, I'll post it here. As for the cover, I'd actually be happy to create a full-size version of it for Thalamus for a couple of copies of the book in return (assuming I get scans of the original artwork to use), but in my experience most publishers tend to get rather insulted when you say "I don't like your cover, but, hey, how about MY version?", so I'm reluctant to make such an offer directly.

Well, here's my idea...not precisely what I had in mind though.
Had some troubles with the signature, and I'm not satisfied with the two white stars plus blue/green backdrop, but it's ok(ish) I guess.

What I wanted was to point out on the cover that 'the fantasy art of Oliver Frey' contain historic as well as futuristic imagery.
And, personally, I think the images I used are among his best work.

Be patient (depending on your modem-speed) picture is +/- 100kb! 8)

Any thoughts? :)

Aww, look...

Here's a reply to a enquiry made to Thalamus Publishing:
Hi David,
thank you for your interest.
The Fantasy Art of Oliver Frey is due for publication by Thalamus Publishing in March 2006.
Check out www.thalamus-books.com nearer the time for pre-order offers. It will be in all good bookshops in the UK, and should also be available from web bookstores.

Regards
Oliver Frey

Hey!! You're the one who spent loads buying old Look and Learn to get hold of some of his work! I bet you have a printed out life sized head of Oli that you kiss every night before going to bed. It probably sleeps between you and the wife! :o

Books take time to create, design and edit. Even the stuff I write, which is very straightforward design-wise, takes something like six months to get to market.
