April fools: The Braybrook type-in
April fools: The Braybrook type-in
You've probably talked about this before on the old board but, damn, that bugger got me!
In issue 24 "Mental Procreation" by Andrew Braybrook detailed his work on the forthcoming game "Morpheus". He mentioned during his writings that he found out that the 6510 in the C64 could be made to run a 2Mhz just like the 8510 in the C128. He even gave a basic program to prove this - the program, when run and new'd would allow any C64 game to run at C128 speed!!!
I was looking forward to playing Alleykat fast. Not to mention Elite (my fave game then)
Only having a C2N (One of those dark ones with the adaptor) I had to endure it not saving properly. I tried SO many times. Eventually it saved. I had a dodgy power supply (I thought) so getting the prog in quick was essential.
After much effort I had the program saved.
Still it had errors.
I had to edit it many times until it started to run...
I was sooooo excited.
I ran it and prepared to load Alleykat...
April Fool!
!
!
!
(I dont remember the exact wording, just my emotions)
!
I couldn't believe that I had spent so much effort on this, for no reason.
I gasped.
And, to be honest, I really wished that I had thought of it first!
Christ he's got me,
Bastard!
But I kind of admired him.
That's one of my Zzap! memories.
Jianso.

This must have been the first time that any mag got the listing printed right. Since when did these things actually work?
You guys were lucky to actually be able to see that it WAS an april fool!

Once again I emerge from beneath a massive pile of paper which makes my desk groan to bring you the world’s most amazing posts.

Took me an hour to type in and what did I get??? April Fool!!!!
On the subject of april fools remember the Blu-Tec Amiga Emulator for the C64 in 1988? I was so excited at the thought of an Amiga running on my C64, turns out it was a Datel Sound sampler and some BLUE TACK!!!!

Pfft...
I recall that listing well.... it was one of the RARE occasions my family all went out for pizza and I declined because I was so busy typing that rubbish out...
Andrew Braybrook owes me a pizza!!!!
As far as I remember it was a border flash with april fools on it... no more that a 30 byte program... yet the listing for that simple effect was huge
Ahhh well...

hi andy, er you're supposed to type in the whole listing to get it to work functionally lol.andy vaisey wrote:I never typed in anything from a magazine that was more then a couple of lines. They never worked. Hardly.
heheh i'm messing, what with the hours i spent doing them when i should've been outside kicking a football about or hassling some poor old codger (as some unfortanately might), but it was all pre-megatape era then so the listings were the best we had (a shame Zzap didn't have them although eventually more than made up for it with the tapes)...some of the listings were actually pretty good, and some were erm...not so good.
but i have as yet to type a c64 listing out from a magazine, unless you count in 'the insult construction kitt' from CU which was multi-format (worked on c64/128 and c16/plus4), and quite funny as i remember. i was one of those slightly neglected c16 owners at the time before upgrading.

I guess I was just really lazy! It was all I could do to raise a finger to press the little red button on my AR Cart.Baz wrote:hi andy, er you're supposed to type in the whole listing to get it to work functionally lol. heheh i'm messing, what with the hours i spent doing them when i should've been outside kicking a football about or hassling some poor old codger...andy vaisey wrote:I never typed in anything from a magazine that was more then a couple of lines.
