Text Adventures
I've recently been playing some of the Infocom text adventures and really enjoying them, but it strikes me that some of the puzzles were very obscure.
Did anyone ever complete any of these without using hints and tips?
Also what were the best and worst text adventure games you ever played?

I played mostly text adventures with graphics and there was a LOT of bad ones - anything by Alternative Software (or more specifically C.A. Sharpe) should be avoided!

For some of the trickier ones, I had to resort to hints; though there were no GameFAQs or even Internet then, so I had to wait a while... The trouble was, the parsers were so limited, on top of which some commands were just illogically chosen or downright stupid.
I feel nostalgic about some of those games, but I don't want them back.

At least now you can ask Chuck Vomit, eh Gordon? (or your missus as she is otherwise known!).

Were you killed by Maxwell's Silver Hammer?Baz wrote:being a fan, i started playing Beatle Quest by Number 9 software last night and i'm still stuck in the first room.
HELP!
i can't believe i died just because i got a bit x-rated with some floozy lying on a bed...maybe there's a certain item hidden somewhere which i could use to do the job safely
We were offered that for Zzap!, but I played it and didn't think it was very good. The effort expended on forcing Beatles lyrics into the text made it very convoluted, the puzzles weren't particularly logical and the game killed you far too quickly and too often if you did something wrong.
By the time we were offered it for covermounting, it looked really dated compared to the best mail-order-only text adventures from the likes of The Guild and others.

i'm slightly shocked
Newsflash...Zzap64 staff turns down The Beatles!
dang, a missed opportunity...just the fact that it was a beatles game alone would've made it worthy enough for inclusion, it could've been the beatle issue...and there has been worse covermounts...but then i'm just biased
i remember reading the review of it in CU as a C16 owner, it received about average marks but he admitted that he wasn't that knowledgable on Beatle lyrics, apparantly crucial to the game...so even though i still had a C16 at the time, that game sort of got me wanting to upgrade more at that point.
in which case it must of been about twenty years ago today to finally get to play it, and now i find out that you're the reason why...although you're right about being killed too quickly like with maxwells silver hammer in which i have been (and for which you should undoubtedly be if lightly bashed with).
i also found that if i ain't been shagged to death i end up starving instead, and that's before i even get out the first room
btw thanks the link LeeT, appreciated...i think i'll give it a fair while with this one first before i look for any help!
i want to beat(le) it alone.

Is this the start of The Long and Winding Road of Beatles references?
