Hi there,

I'm Neo-Rio from the Gamebase 64 team. As some of you may already be aware, our mission is to preserve a database of Commodore 64 games for the enjoyment of everyone. To that end, we hunt out every single Commodore 64 game possible - including type-in games from magazines and books, and I'm usually the one who spends his spare time typing them out.

I'm just curious which of the other mags contain C64 type-ins. We will probably get the C+VG and Commodore User mag DVDs because we're certain we don't have all the type-ins from those mags. Also I think we have scans of the type-in games from BigK and Commodore Horizons as well.

I've currently been working my way through the games from Computer Gamer (after lifting the scans from the world of spectrum ftp), and I've nearly completed all the games - with the exception of any games in issue 23. I have no idea if there were any game listings for the C64 in that issue (the listings from that issue were not uploaded to the ftp) -- but if there were, I'd be really grateful if the scans could be passed along. The more games I get done, the more games appear in the next update of Gamebase 64

Any other multiformat mags have C64 type ins?

Cheers,

HI Neo-Rio,
Just checked, the 3 listings all appear to be spectum listing as they contain Bright statements, weird I am sure I uploaded the mag to the site with the others?

Good luck with the typing and it will be good to see the Andrew Braybrook April fools jokes again without the wrist strain

Cheers, thanks for checking that out!
Well, issue 23 on the world of spectrum FTP contained the whole issue EXCEPT the listings pages (from about page 66-80something)

Therom and the icy wastes! I had no idea it was a prank until I typed the bugger in! Will most likely appear in GBv6 for completions sake.

Yep, all those games should be in Gamebase by now.

Currently, I'm working on getting type-ins done from an old French multi-format magazine called "Hebdogiciel" into Gamebase. This is resulting in a LOT of hand-typing stuff in and double checking it for bugs (i.e. a ton of work).

Out of about 97 missing games, I've done about 1/3 of them... mainly the larger games. Fortunately most of the scans I have are fairly clear. I've uncovered maybe one or two real gems from what I have done so far, but most of the games only represent barely passable crud.... but that's type-ins for you! It's a rare thing when you play the game for longer than it took you to type them in!

You can get most of my work from the following site. They are being released here as a "pre-release" to showing up in the next version of Gamebase 64.

Isn't it just?

I have a few more game releases up on that site now, including (yet another) breakout clone, a Jawbreaker clone, something that sorta resembles Elevator Action, and a rather fun platform game called "Wiltor". Also up there is largest (and nastiest) type-in I think I have ever done.... and I have done a lot..... called "Golf".

In total, the game takes up 185 blocks on a 1541 floppy, and contained reams and reams of DATA statements to type in, and horrible control characters that appeared as barely legible blobs in the listing. After having to hand check every single DATA statement by hand (and there sure were a lot of them), I had to decipher the control character and graphics character blobs in the rest of the listing!

Fortunately the end result was quite a playable little game, and another piece of code salvaged from an ancient papyrus due to good software archaeology !
