As you may know, the situation on how to store the full scanned issues is pretty messy at the moment.

Some of them are on Fortune City (more were but they deleted the account!) and others are on webspace kindly donated by PyramaidHead.

The problem with the donated space is that it will no longer be available in a couple of months as the company is winding down.

There is another option open to me, about 18 months ago I register a domain and got an account with supposible unlimitied space and bandwidth (it was a limited offer). http://www.westerndirectory.com

The business idea never really got off the ground and I'll be winding it up pretty soon, however having unlimitied web space for 15 a month seems a bit too good to give up and would be ideal for storing the Zzap issues.

However, I'm already paying out over 150 for this site a year and don't want to have to pay out another 180.

The main option would be to plaster adverts all over the html pages of the scanned pages to try and recope some of the expenses, but the way the advertising market is at the moment, that might not work.

The second option is to receive donations from people, I could set up a PayPal type thing or a Credit card account and people could donate just a couple of pounds every now and again.

Would anybody be interested in donating a pound or two to have the scanned issues online in the one place and reliabily available?

Personally I would be willing to pay for the privilege as there is obvious a lot of work involved in the production of the scans and web pages, not to mention vast bandwidth and storage space!

I suggest charging on a per issue basis, at least that way there would be an incentive towards getting more issues online.

The only drawback for yourself is that I once the issues are up, the funds will dry up as most Zzap fans will have purchased their copy! But I guess that will happen which every way you work it.

It is a problem without an easy solution!
But, shall I say it! Shall I....everyone else does...
Keep up the good work :-)

Well charging on a per issue basis would be a bit too much like I was selling the magazines, which of course is not my intention at all, these magazines are still probably copyrighted (by whoever owns the rights to Zzap, if anyone) so even putting them online is dodgy. Directly charging for them would be a no-no, even although it would just be to cover the hosting costs.

I think the donation idea is probably the way to go, even if I managed to get half the costs that way, that would do me or maybe put a few banner ads up as well.

Each issue takes up around 30-40MB so it's hard to say when my "unlimited" web space will become limited, could I get away with using 2Gb?! x-)

Sure, everybody says keep up the good work, but it's still aprreciated! :-)

Hello Iain,
Yeah a donation method sounds fine to me, I would certainly be willing to pay for it. I wonder though if you get enough regular visitors though to cover your costs, you certainly seem to get a good number of hits.
It might be worth putting in a survey on your pages to see if enough people are willing to donate.

It does seem a pity for the project to come unstuck on this technicality especially as yourself and Mort are willing to put a good bit of your time into making the stuff available, plus there being a great interest within the c64 community.

I hope a solution is on the way...

Just discovered the site and I'm blown away, superb! I lost all of my Zzaps years ago (sob) and am desperate to download as many scanned issues as possible. I too would be willing to pay. Maybe U could post issues on a 'rotational' basis? Upload in block of ten and switch them around every month or so. I know this would be a pain but at least people have access to more issues on the limited space you have available. Just a thought...
