In some cases, Zzap!'s reviews were not so trustworthy. In the Italian Zzap!, the Armalyte review was introduced by a comment saying that Hawkeye was published by a house "very close" to Newsfield. I thought that was bullshit, and stopped buying the Italian Zzap! a few months after. But Warren Lapworth, in The Burrow (http://www.the-burrow.freeserve.co.uk/zzap/towers/towers3.html), confirms all and says that Hawkeye only deserved 80%, it was awarded a Gold Medal because Thalamus was "Newsfield's software house" (as far as I can remember, no Thalamus game got a bad review!).
Another case was Operation Thunderbolt, in issue 57. In issue 47, page 13, they stated "What Zzap!'s not got: rewiews of pre-production or unfinished copies". But they reviewed an unfinished copy of Op.Thunderbolt and awarded it 92%. That version was scrapped and a much worse one was released instead. In issue 78, page 74, they said "it bore little resemblance with the original - as Lloyd pointed out so well in the Rrap at that time" (I don't remember that the question was ever mentioned in the Rrap. Does anybody?).
Add finally, FOFT. It was slated in TGM in April 1988 ("a load of old rubbish" according to an ad in Zzap! 48, page 96), but Gremlin got angry about that so they gave it 96% when the Amiga version was reviewed in Zzap! (issue 51). According to a poster in the Zzap!Back message board (http://www.w2s.net/zzap/wwwboard/messages/181.html), "the game was appalling". In fact, the game fell into oblivion, while many people still love Elite after so many years.
