I was wondering, did any of you guys ever buy other Newsfield stuff, Like Mean Machines and LM (I always used to think that it was LM as in Lloyd Mangram)? I never did and I wondered if they were any good.

Yep, I read Mean Machines which was an excellent read! Still have ONE issue left of it, still re-read it.
Also interesting because Jaz was editing it by that time. VERY cool mag!(strictly consoles though)

Yes I did - In fact I bought most of them, and I still have most (if not all) of them!
Sad I know, but after reading ZZap! I wanted
to branch out and see if the other mags had
the same style, and quite often they did.
Here's the ones I can remember..LM,CRASH,
AMTIX!,MOVIE,FEAR,THE ONE and err thats
about it!
Pity that LM was dropped after four issues -
It was ahead of its time!

Sorry to be pedantic, but wasnt MEAN MACHINES
published by EMAP??
I think Jaz edited it quite a bit after
leaving Newsfield

Never bought LM (Leisure Monthly), which looked like a wussy Loadedesque mag without the women. However, I did grab the Games Machine a few times, only totally ignoring it once it turned into Raze and dropped 8bit support.

Stuck with Zzap!64 close to the end (just missed the final two Forces)...

I think Andy1 means The Games Machine (which was by Newsfield, and absolutely brilliant for the first twelve issues...very much a forerunner to ACE and Edge in style and tone) :)

Mean Machines was great, too...

LM was really good - it wasnt very sexist, as
they had a few female writers. In fact it was a bit 'right on' as there was features about safe sex etc....Doubt you would see that in Loaded!!
Re:THE GAMES MACHINE....Gary Penn & Graeme Kidd (ex-CRASH ed) were sacked after the first issue...Think it was cos they wanted no 8bit stuff in whatsoever??
RAZE....Dunno why they changed from TGM to that as the design was awful, looked sub C&VG
(ie like a five year olds comic!)

Got all the Crash issues and the Games Machine until it turned to Raze ( I had a Speccy as well as a 64 sshh, and an Amiga from Chrimble 87).
I heard about ZZap from the adverts published in Crash so I was on the ball about getting the first issues ( these are scanned
and on Iains server at the moment). Like the idea of a ZZap reunion issue, it would not be too difficult to do over the internet, the main point would be to have a new oli cover all the articles could be submitted by the original writers and it could be easily distributed by email and printed at people`s work places he he he, but seriously it would be really cool.

the only copy I have left of Mean Machines (indeed EMAP) was issue 15 the Xmas 1991, it had a massive 196 pages and sure was a great mag.
Julian Rignall edited it and it had a lot of things zzap used to have. (surprisingly?)
I hope one day someone will scan all the interesting MM-issues and put them online!
I read the Games Machine for the first couple of issues, but I wasn't too excited about it.
Would be great to have a Zzap 2001 special issue, with some of the original editors and reviewers contributing. Should be retro c64 though, not reviewing 'modern' games.
Who would have the connections to actually get things rollin'? (bribe 'm!)

Hi all,

Ah yes, TGM - I remember it resonably well.
I started at Newsfield on The Games Machine before moving to ZZAP! It could/would have been great if we kept the momentum going from Issue 1 with a selection of non computer related reviews (Eg. remote controlled cars, hi fi stuff etc.) It got sucked into the games scene fairly quickly and tried to copy C & VG. A bit of diversity would have been great. I think we should have dropped the 8 bit stuff but you live and learn.

The One was always a good magazine IMHO.

Never mind, it was interesting times.

It would have ended up like T3, although before T3 existed...
