Yes I have moved a ton of old computer mags
so now I can finally start re-reading all
my old ZZAP's and looking back....
I think the mag definetly improved 100% when
Chris Anderson and Bob Wade left and the mag
moved to Ludlow. I thought it was pretty
scandalous that CA was altering JR and GP's
reviews so that he could give them sizzlers
etc.
Also weird to think that Tony Crowther is now 37 and Archer Maclean 40!! Bloody hell - You
kinda expect them to stay in a time loop!!
Who would have thought that (thanks to
emulation) we would still be playing C64 games almost 20 years on. The Lastabilty
scores should definetly go up on some games!!

It's also odd in retrospect to see certain games were under-rated, such as Kikstart II, Wizball and so on, whereas some were massively over-rated.

Goes with the territory, I guess. :)

Yes, I know what you mean...
The reviewers seemed to be generous with
a lot of the scores on certain games, probably not to offend the software houses.
There again, remember the BRIAN BLOODAXE
review - THE EDGE got quite shirty about
that (though the came was very rubbish!)

It seemed as though there was a letter every over month to Rrap from people thinking the odd review was fixed. For me, the mag was bloody invaluable in picking games...Arkanoid II should have got a higher mark though!

I think (to a certain extent) the ZZAP! team
were under a lot of pressure from certain
software companies, certainly in the early days. Some companies who offered competition prizes probably hoped they were gonna automatically get a decent review

Yep, I agree!
And The Sentinel shouldn't have gotten a Gold Medal!
The first Arkanoid was a winner too, btw.
Not to mention Krakout & Delta.
Bounces should have been a sizzler too.
The 'power' of C.Anderson in the beginning was indeed ridiculous, as I have stated earlier on this rrap-board. It's funny to read all about it in the first few zzapbacks.

"The Sentinel" was sheer brilliance!!!!!

And on the Amiga it was even better :)

The Sentinel was only TOP for the ones who could get into it. A sizzler-rating should have been fine.
As someone already said:
"it was too much of an aquired taste", or something.
Head over Heels & Mercenary were sheer brilliance to me.

Even though many reviews backed up or faced an ad for the same game, i never worried about the review itself. In fact, it seemed they marked down because of it, on the odd occasion!
