Yeap, I've gotten another (and final!) print run of 100 issues.

There are sitting in front of me, so there no pending orders hassle. If I don't send out an order within 4 days, you get the issue for free. That should motivate me to get them out fast!!

I also feel a little guilty about the previous mess of everybody not getting the issue since I ran out, so I'm throwing in a CD with full scans of a few of the issues as well as the PDF files of issue 107

So order the printed issue right now!

Iain,

How I didn't end up ordering one of these the first time round is between me and my priest -- can you email me your address so I can buy one of the second bunch?

Cheers,
G

ps. I've put news of the printed version on my site.

Mine arrived today (Thanks Iain) and all I can say is Awesome (that's not ALL I can say, obviously, otherwise I'd have a very limited vocabulary...um...)

For those who are interested; the issue 107 currently for sale on ebay has now hit the 20 mark. Maybe I should buy a couple more, advertise 'em as "signed by one of the Zzap team" (ie. me, albeit for only this issue!)

CraigG posted 04-04-2003 01:16 PM GMT     Click Here to See the Profile for CraigG  Click Here to Email CraigG
20? That's insane! Mind you, I suppose it is one of only (now) 200. And it has got a really nice cover, by me and Oli! :D

Hey, Iain, how about uploading the "poster" version of the cover to the site, so people can download and print it. (This is a high-quality JPEG file, which has only the cover art and the Zzap!64 logo.)

Em, that Zzap107 on eBay ended up going for 21.90. Time to put up my prices for the printed versions then! ;-) Collectables you know and destined to appreciate in value!

Iain, has that "meatball" guy from the Lemon forum ordered another copy yet? Just curious. (I was the "Marlon Kassaliss who defended you - one likes to assume a Pseudonym from time to time - we've gotta protect our boys on the front line! If you ever need an agent @:-) )

It would be a very nice thing to do for Zzap's 20th Birthday. And it's far enough away not to worry about it for quite a while. :))

would that make me as famous as the editors of zzap! 107? don't think so, they're my heroes! ;)

I'd happily contribute again (I'd need to insist on new reviewer sketches though, now that I've got rid of that "girl's bob" thing I had going during 107).
CraigG posted 23-04-2003 01:20 PM GMT     Click Here to See the Profile for CraigG  Click Here to Email CraigG
Despite my slight negativity on this and Lemon, I probably would be happy to do another Zzap!64 at some point. However, 107 took about two weeks of unpaid work for me to do (design, subbing and writing) so the timing would have to be right, and people would have to be a lot better with deadlines (the slackers know who they are!)

However, in many ways I like Zzap!64 107 being the very last. We met our goal of creating a fitting finale for our favourite computer mag of all time, and I reckon 108 would dillute that... Still, as I said, you never know...

akaandy1, just for the record, I hardly giggled once while drawing your bob-thing. ;)

Craig's on the money ... if 108 were to happen we would have to be stricter with deadlines. Though doing so may be something of double-edged sword.

FromWithin posted 23-04-2003 02:39 PM GMT     Click Here to See the Profile for FromWithin  Click Here to Email FromWithin
Surely an issue #108 should have some contribution from all of the original "cast" of contributors? Surely it's not too hard...most of them seem to work in the games industry now anyway.
CraigG posted 23-04-2003 04:44 PM GMT     Click Here to See the Profile for CraigG  Click Here to Email CraigG
FromWithin--Well, most of them were contacted for 107. Gordon took on about two-thirds of the subbing work, along with writing some articles; Paul Glancey and Robb Hogg wrote some stuff and Paul subbed at least one piece; and that's it. No-one else was interested at the time (or at least didn't respond). Actually, there is one exception to the above--Steve Jarrett has since told me that he was up for writing at least one article, but somehow someone forgot to get back to him...

I blame Gazunta. ;-D

DAMN ME!!!!!

I would write more on this subject (and I haveabit to say on it, I think)...but I just downloaded the Italian translation / extension of #107 and I'm just...speechless.

Just...totally speechless.

I've just downloaded and looked at it as well. Quite impressive, although what the hell is a speccy game doing in there??! ;-)

Quite strange seeing Italian coming out of Mort's bubble though :)

Must put them up on my site for download.

What I want to know is; where are MY comments!? I'm still listed as a contributor on the contents page, but all of my writing has been removed, the bastards! It's a bloody cheek that Gordon's editorial has been completely removed too, especially considering how much of our work they've actually used. And Spectrum PoP, a speccy game in Zzap...WHY?

Did they ask anyone's permission to do this? I'm guessing not. I suppose we should be flattered, but still...

AntStiller posted 28-04-2003 12:46 PM GMT     Click Here to See the Profile for AntStiller  Click Here to Email AntStiller
From reading/interpreting the editorial it sounds like they did get permission.

I can understand what you're saying -- *ahem* it seems that someone got left off the list of Illustrators *ahem* -- but I can't begrudge them that. The amount of work they've done is pretty bloody impressive.

But, yeah, I'd probably feel a little jilted too.

She'll be right, mate (and other Aussie euphemisms).

AntStiller posted 28-04-2003 12:49 PM GMT     Click Here to See the Profile for AntStiller  Click Here to Email AntStiller
No, wait. I meant platitude. "She'll be right" is definitely a platitude. Or is it vernacular? Curse you, high school English!
iain posted 28-04-2003 10:46 PM GMT     Click Here to See the Profile for iain  Click Here to Email iain
Well I assume they asked permission, since they must have gotten hold of the original DTP page layouts to change.

I doubt they did it from scratch.

Anyways, I don't think a legal case against them would quite hold up in court!! ;-)

For the record, the Zzap! Italy guys asked Gordo and I for permission regarding translating the issue to Italian. I also sent all the source files over, so they could use them. However, the result was _very_ different to what I was expecting (I can't speak for Gordo, but I guess that was the same for him). Very little got used from our version, which was a shame, but they did put a lot of effort into making an entirely new mag, which is what the Italian Zzap! was anyway. As for the editorial, it was logical that this was written by an ex-editor of that magazine, rather than Gordo, who wrote for the UK edition.

From my perspective, the look/design was a little... iffy, although I understand the Italian designer used a different package to me, so had to recreate things from scratch (he used XPress, and I was using InDesign).

As for the Speccy game, the Italian Zzap! was always mutli-format (think Games Machine)...

>For the record, the Zzap! Italy guys asked Gordo and I for permission regarding translating the issue to Italian.<

Yep - they were very nice about it (and continue to be so): very friendly, and respectful towards the whole idea of Zzap!

>I also sent all the source files over, so they could use them. However, the result was _very_ different to what I was expecting (I can't speak for Gordo, but I guess that was the same for him).<

Sort of. I'd kind of imagined they'd stick to the original form of z107; but then I heard about the Quark issue (Quark is a dog compared to InDesign, IMHO - Kati uses Quark and hates it, and I've meddled with ID and find it relatively easy to use; and on top of all that Quark is hugely expensive); and I knew that the old Italian Zzap!s had quite a different and distinctive style compared to the UK Zzap!s, so it wasn't a total surprise to see how different it turned out.

It's a shame some of the reviewers' comments got cut out, but this happened with the original anyway (Jaz's head appears on some reviews, spouting Italian, but a lot didn't make the translation); but conversely, I'm not at all bothered that my editorial went. Some of it wouldn't have made sense for an Italian audience anyway. I guess in the end they retained what fitted in their. Personally, I think they did a good job given the time they had to do it in - Craig's efforts in supplying the source materials certainly helped, as the guy in charge of the project told me on several occasions

Anyway, I should apologise while I'm here, because I suppose I should have mentioned it more widely in this forum when I was contacted about the Italian z107 project, just to see if anyone objected, or had ideas or contributions they wanted to make. So... Sorry :)

G.

Hey, I just had a look and they got rid of me too. Bastardo!

I'm not bothered, though, they do their thing and that's fine. As long as I've got my lovely, printed copy of our 107, with me firmly entrenched in it, then I'm happy!

Just noticed that my Metal Warrior comments are still there. However, I did see that one of their own reviewers was there, and as a result, they downgraded the Overall mark to 86%, and thus no Sizzler! They mustn't have liked it quite as much as we did....
