I was just wanting to ask you guys who your fave reviewer was, and why? I always liked Gary Penn's opinions, they were honest and straight to the point. If he hated a game, he made damn sure you knew it. I always found Julian Rignall too 'forgiving'.

I almost always agreed with Steve Jarrath, who therefore was a ace reviewer in my opinion. Daa.

For me, Jules represented the character of the mag and he's the one I remember most, so I guess Riggers it is.

Always liked Penn and Rignall's reviews, thought Glancey's thumbs up pic was funny! Hamza was quite cute-when you're 13....

Jaz and Gaz were my faves, they were the most up-front of all the reviewers. Gaz's were the first comments I'd read as he was usually closer to what I'd think.

In the last period's Zzap! (which was crap, the quality of the mag fell in issue 74 when they dropped Amiga coverage, never to rise again) I liked Ian Osborne very much. His reviews were informative and his severity in judgements was just right.

Surely ZZAP was better BEFORE they started
covering the Amiga??!
For me, it started going downhill after
Gordon Houghton & co left, though the
'golden era' was when JR,GP & PS were there!

i totally agree Leet, the mag was a bit diluted after Amiga stuff came in, plus it seemed a little less anarchic and not as "crazy gang" as it had before

I liked Rignall's writing style.

As for the downhill thing, the writing was on the wall during the Gordon/Maff/Kati era when they went all "wacky" and started trying to be Viz, but at least it was still readable.

It really started to go downhill mid 92(?) when that Miss.Whiplash woman took over. I mean, what the f**k was all that about!? It stunk.

I totally agree.... Miss whiplash was the time when ZZap really licked the ground! I still think (though u all seem to disagree) that even after Gordo & co left, Stuart Wayne, Rob Hogg and Phil King did a great job of keeping the spirit alive. In fact I found that era to be the most entertaining!! and Phil King was, is and always will be my favourite reviewer.

I also think that Stuart/Phil/Rob era was very good for the most part..only when they made it less multi-opined, i liked it less. Rob was very good, especially with tips. Also stuart/scorelord. Gordo/Kati etc. did not realize that inclusion of wacky..primarily british humor will not appeal to most international fans, and what happened to the pages...the 50th issue was only 84 pages! somebody was eating up the pages! Gordo?
from the Gaz/Jaz era, Jaz was my fave..Gaz was also very good. Jaz would overall win the fave reviewer award from me.

Hi Farhan,

Thanks for the compliment on the ZZAP!64 website. The tips were hard work to put together each issue but it was great fun and I really got a kick out of exploring the games with the aim of helping our readership out. I am not totally sure that all of those pokes worked but you win some, you lose some. My favourite tips bit was the Ghouls N Ghosts map, hack and cheat. An awesome collection of tips!!!

I couldn't have done it without expert help from Warren Pilkington and others.

JR`s hairstyles always made me laugh...a miracle no-one in the Zzap-offices lost an eye every time he bent down to pick up something :)
