OK, there's 3 ways we can go about it.

1 - .tap file bundled with the PDF.

2 - .d64 file bundled with the PDF.

3 - A real honest to goodness tape, bound to a real honest to goodness printed issue.

#3 would be prohibitively expensive (though if someone were to enquire about the cost / process for such a route, please get in contact with me with the results) so I guess the easiest way to do it would be #1 or #2.

This is where I need the advice of people experienced in building new .tap / .d64 images from scratch. Anyone? :)

Please also post opinions about what should be on it. Yossarian revealed what was originally intended for the 107 tape and I think that's the best lineup. Folks?

I reckon the games should be selected from (or all of) those within the top 10 article.

I think there should be both a TAP and d64 file. I agree that the top 10 voted games would be good, Elite's bound to feature anyway. An actual tape would be seriouosly cool, but probably impractical.

I like option 2

...and as for the content, the Top 10 games seems like the best idea.

hmmm... yeah top 10 .d64 is the best idea... or maybe 2 magatapes!!! :) one with top 10 and one with the expected games in ish 107 :)

also... we can have the top 10 tunes in there too.... in sid format. to relive the first megatape's sanxion Robb tune era! :)

I love this idea. When it comes to the tape/magazine, I don't know about anyone else, but I for one would pay up to 10 pounds or more for a real paper/real tape combo.

Maybe when the magazine contents are complete, a pay-in-advance format could be done. get the money from whoever is interested in buying a paper mag and get the money together to get it printed up. that way, you would have the money up-front.

in regard to Megatape contents, is anybody up to creating a 'reader game' or two like there used to be on the Zzap! tapes?

Emm, shouldn't the games on the megatape have been released officially to Public Domain, before we decide to include them?

I know Elite has been released to PD by one of its programmers...

Well, if there were another 1,500 of you, then a printed version would be viable. However, having been involved in a similar sized magazine before (and therefore being aware of the costs), it ain't gonna happen!

Dmitris -

I'm in two minds about this issue...if we were doing the mag for money, sure, we'd need the official OK by the current (c) holder. Since this is basically a fan-based project though...

Ian Bell waived the (c) on Elite some time ago as you said, and it's a safe bet that Elite will make the list.

To be on the safe side, I'll track down and contact current (c) holders on what other titles eventually get selected.

From memory - Jeff Minter and Gremlin (now part of Eidos?) have declared all their 8-bit titles PD. So lets hope the list gets filled with Llamasoft games and various Monty On The Run sequels :)

for Gremlin, I think the people who bought them was Infogrames, who also bought Ocean. Eidos bought Domark and US Gold. its a sad state of affairs when companies feel they have to sell out.

D'oh, Infogrammes...

Melbourne House (now part of the Infogrammes conglomerate) have declared all their 8-bit titles PD - I worked in their old office a few years back and the original covers for Fist, Hobbit etc were framed and mounted on the walls...what I'd give for them now :)
