Hi fellow zzap-aficionados!
I wonder if there was anyone of you 'loyal zzap rrap contributors'who are interested in football? (no, not Matchday II, or International Soccer, but the REAL thing!)
Anyway, I expect a cool tournament with plenty of surprises (Japan, Cameroon) and Argentina will win the cup beating England in the semi-finals (yes there's a huge change they'll meet again.)
Shame that Holland's not present! Booooh! :(
Cool thing is that in exactly the Bit-live weekend we have the quarterfinals! England (if they make it) will actually be playing 21 st of JUNE (BIT-day) or the 22nd.
So, I'm gonna watch the game in LONDON! Yeehaa!
This afternoon I foresee the french team winning over Senegal with 3-1.
Any other opinions?
Taa!
Rob

I agree, I LOVE football. The club team I support (and actually go and watch) is Liverpool FC, by far the greatest team the world has ever seen. My hope is that England's MANY injury worries don't come back to haunt them, Beckham is now passed as fit, but for how long?. And at the time of writing, Senegal are beating France 1-0! Come on Senegal!

i'm going to be watching every single match (apart from the double-headers at the end of the group stage, of course, which would require two tvs and two brains to take it all in). that france result was just excellent -- and i've just finished the ireland-cameroon match.

this next month is going to be bliss...

if england don't win, i'm hoping argentina do (mainly because i have an argentinian email friend -- sorry all you anti-simeone fans). it's just a shame holland aren't there.

Hi Gordon (& the other Zzap& footbal crazies)
at this moment Germany is trashing The Arabs, which is not exactly what I expected... Err, and Senegal beating France was quit a shock too :)
Cameroon gave a good impression the first half against the Irish. Denmark was just lucky. Marvelous goals btw.
Can't wait for Argentina-Nigeria!
I expect a lot of goals! I gotta have it right one time :)
Anyway Gordon, I'm with ya!
See y'all!

DAMMIT!!!!!!!

I moved to America a couple of years ago, and not only are tha games on at stupid times in the morning here coz of the time difference, I've just discovered that occasionally games that are supposed to be broadcast live (ALL games are SUPPOSED to be live) are not being shown live because a big TV network is showing them at 3:30 the following afternoon. This happened with the Ireland game, and IT'S HAPPENING WITH THE ENGLAND GAME AS WELL!!!!!!!!!! I'm FURIOUS about it. Goddamn stupid Yanks, don't know a decent sport when it kicks them up the arse (Sorry for generalising, I know there are Americans that like the beautiful game....).

Rant over....for now....until it hits me again....

Fucking England! Same old FRUSTRATING story; we get the lead, play well in the first half, then throw it away in the second. What's the line from the "Three Lions" song? Gonna throw it away...

Calm down, calm down! :)
Remember Sweden has a tricky team.
England has to beat Nigeria now (do-able), and a draw against Argentina. ( A. wouldn't mind)
Btw, I'd better stop 'foreseeing' the results! :) (France beating Senegal 3-1, lots of goals in the Argentina/Nigeria match...oh boy!)
Nevermind.
I hope we'll have a couple of stunts to go!
Later,
Rob

On the other hand, depending how group A goes, might be better to be runnersup!

1-0 1-0 he he he, yep what a match against Argentina, last 20 minuits almost stopped my heart. Phew :-p

Yeah -- they were as good today as they were bad on Sunday. I can't help feeling that Hargreaves' injury was a lucky break -- Sinclair did quite well on the left, and Scholes looked much better in the centre. The hero for me, though, was Butt -- what a game he had (and Ferdinand, too)

Even Heskey had a decent game (did some nifty defending and came back to provide extra cover in midfield when needed). Shame Owen's nutmeg attempt hit the post, that would've been one of THE goals of the tournament. Or maybe I'm just biast being a Liverpool fan an' all.

Oh boy! Excellent tournament so far!
I don't miss holland at all :)
Woah, I didn't expect England to beat Argentina! Well done, well done.
(I still have good memories of Holland beating Argentina in WC 1998, remember the Bergkamp-goal in the last minute?? Now THAT was a goal!!!)
Anyway, thumbs up for England, and I hope (and guess) that they'll meet Argentina again in the semi-finals.
Cheers

And now Argentina are out, AWESOME! All we need now is for the crafty Hun to go out, and all of blighty's enemies are vanquished!

(my apologies to any Germans on this board who don't appreciate irony)

What about Spain & Brazil then?
Italy still can make it to the 2nd round.
And I don't think that denmark's an easy opponent as well. (see England's result against sweden.) If England manages to get to the quarter finals they probably stumble upon Brazil.... I'm in London that weekend...would be awesome!!!!

Well, now Portugal are out too.
I tend to agree that Denmark will be tricky and no doubt Brazil in the middle of the afternoon in that heat would be nigh on impossible, but Germany out?
Who wants that when we could possibly have an England Vs Germany final (no chance I know - but as a dream) that would be fantastic.
Maybe we could put another 5 past them!!

Hi folks,
I hear all those Italians complaining about the way they were knocked out of the tournament, incredible!
I can't believe the Italian arrogance!
There seems to be no room for any self criticism!
The knock out of the Italian squad was totally deserved, and should have happened way earlier (against Mexico).
When you want to win a match, you have to score more goals!
Vieri could have decided the match with ease, he kicked the ball sky high in front of an empty goal!!! If he would have scored, Korea would have been out of the tournament. No problem, no complaints, no argueing.
The rule in football is: when you miss huge oportunities like the one from Vieri, the goal will fall at the other side.
Italy got in trouble because they didn't finish the job while they were able to do so. It's their own bloody fault.
So stop crying about the referee being biased and all that cr*p.
Sure they we're disadvantaged against Croatia, but against Korea they had it all in their own hand. They just gave it all away.
Totti should have been send off in the first half for the elbowing-thing, just as Vieri in the first half, so they were lucky. They were lucky too when Korea missed a 200% penalty. (look at the replay people, the boy's shirt stretched 3 meters or something!)
What really makes me sick is the 'falling disease' of the Italians, especially Inzaghi & Totti are to blame. The italians and all the others who invented & abused 'the schwalbe' are now paying the price for their unfair behaviour. For referees it's getting almost impossible to see if it's fair or foul.
So Italy, stop the sobbing, everyone gets what he deserves in the end!
South Korea, I hope you win the world cup, or England of course:)

If Italy ever want to win the worldcup they should get themselves a revolutionary coach (Hiddink, maybe?) who gets the 'catenaccio'-system out of their heads, and a wonder-doctor who cures their 'falling disease'.

In that case, they might just make it with a little bit of luck.
Unless they stumble upon Holland, that is :)

Byeee Rob

I agree with every word -- and now Perugia have gone and sacked the Korean goalscorer. It's unbelievable. Sure, Italy were unlucky with a couple of decisions, but as soon as they had scored their goal, they shut down and waited for the 1-0 win.

This continues to be a great World Cup....

Hi Gordon!
What about England friday?
I think they’re going to lose in a silly way, or walk straight over brasil.
(sensible predictions inc.)
Btw, nice to know that I’m not the only one in the whole Italy discussion!
On the lemon-board there’s a lot of disagreement!

Yeah, well I can see why Italians might feel differently about the result: they could argue that Totti shouldn't have been sent off. But they were still complacent and thought they'd could hang on for the 1-0.

As for England -- I've got a feeling they'll win. If it was an evening kick off and Gerard was playing, I'd be sure of it...

Back on the Perugia thing and the Korean player Ahn, the statements from their Chairman were unacceptable - Scoring the goal was an insult to Italian pride after they had welcomed him into their country so he bites the hand that feeds him.
Italy are just showing arrogance they have shown a number of times throughout history. A little worrying in the grander scheme of things.
Still, off politics, back to football.
It's approaching 12 hours to kick off.
Who will it be?
I'd love it if we could do it, but I still favour the Brazilians...
Enjoy BIT all of those who are going. I'm in London but still won't make it for various reasons.

Jesus B.Jim

i really can't believe some of the Bordering on the Xenophobic stuff you've come out with on this thread .
it's quite shocking the amount of dislike you have for the italian game . but aren't they allowed to play the way they want .its up to them .
personally i think the defend and counter is an excellent way to play ,as the brazillian/african style can leave you very vunarable at the back.

and as for diving /cheating all players do it
koemans pulling down platty
becks and owen diving
itlay shirt pulling
brazil acting.

that's why you you need better referees.and maybe more of them . the game is a lot quicker than it was 30 years ago ,and many of the referres are not atheletes (but they should be ) and cannot keep up with the game

i think we all know what we saw in the italy/spain games

I think we all know what we saw in the italy/spain games...

yep, we saw two of the supposedly strongest european sides losing totally deserved from a very modest team like south korea.
Instead of complaining and pointing fingers at others, it would be nice if they took some time for self-reflection.
Both Spain & Italy paid the price for their negative football-mentality, they were not beaten by bad referees but by themselves.

I hope we're gonna have a brill' final.
(my prediction: Bra-Ger 3-2)

Cheers,
Rob

CORBAL, what the hell are you talking about? NOTHING Biggest Jim said could be taken as xenophobic, he was NOT critisising Italians or their nation, he was critisising the startegy the team adopted, and I completely agree with him. You CANNOT sit back on a 1-0 lead for 3 quarters of a game, apart from the fact that it makes incredibly dull viewing, it doesn't work. You may have noticed that both Spain and Italy are out of the cup, does this not prove that despite what you think, it is NOT "...a brilliant way to play..."

Stop being to damn' Polically correct, we're discussing FOOTBALL, not socio political differences.

errr.... cmon ppl :) its just a game (since my country's team ranks 182, i CAN say that!) :P

anyway.... i'd say... seeing Kahn's keeping... Brazil will be lucky to get a 1-0 win! thats MY prediction :)

corbal posted 29-06-2002 09:46 AM GMT     Click Here to See the Profile for corbal  Click Here to Email corbal
wtf !!! are you mad??? people please
i can't belive what i'm hearing
if the italians and spanish deserved to go out and had lost a fair match thats fine ,
my old italian flatmate was devestated when italy lost to france in euro 2000 , but like most people he blamed the team for blowing constant chances . Yes that was their fault ,i was pissed off aswell cos i had pony on them to win with the bookies .

this world cup the same chap is livid because although they weren't great they still stuck the ball in the net only to have valid goals disallowed , or they have very dubious offsides called against them

Had the italian and the spanish goals counted (and lots of others in this worldcup ,These are just the highest profile cases ) then the scorelines would have been very different
luckily i didn't put any money down this year

i think some of us need to be a little more objective , atrocious decisions have cost teams games , and even Blatter (fifa President ) has said so .Hopefully this will be the last world cup with pub-team standard referees ..

so answer that and stay fashionable.

akaandy1 posted 29-06-2002 02:06 PM GMT     Click Here to See the Profile for akaandy1  Click Here to Email akaandy1
Stay fashionable? Um...

I agree completely that some refereeing decisions have been atrocious (show me a recent World Cup where they WEREN'T), but the point that I and Rob were making, is that a number of teams (including, but not JUST Italy) adopted the wrong strategy and have paid the price. I'm an England fan, and the way we played in the second half against Brazil was utter bollocks, we deserved to lose (and NO WAY should Brazil have received a red card). But the point is, while Italy had dubious goals dis-allowed, they did not push hard enough and put teams under enough pressure.

The reason why I wrote what I did is cos you were accusing Rob of being Xenophobic, which is a HELL of a thing to accuse someone of being. Let's just play nice Kids. And COME ON BRAZIL!

btw, you Italian by any chance?
